The VISION

The Project is managed by a Committee of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from diverse academic and professional backgrounds and expertise.The main focus of the first year’s research has been on preparatory research and the development of a bibliography and essay on Newfoundland Nationalism. During the next three years, focus group sessions will be held in the various regions of the province. In addition, gaps identified during the preparatory research phase will inform and help determine future research direction and activities.

The Workshop

On Friday, April 27th, the Association of Heritage Industries will host a workshop in St. John’s for the CURA project, Canadians and Their Pasts – Newfoundland and Labrador. The project focuses primarily on understanding the relationship between cultural producers – writers, artists, museum and heritage site curators, historians, genealogists, teachers, and volunteers – and the public perception of the past. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the methodology of the project, to decide on research themes and priorities, and to cement alliances with potential partners and others with an interest in project outcomes. Year one of Newfoundland and Labrador project will end with the April 27 workshop intended for local scholars, community heritage organizations and the general public which will provide an overview of the project, a panel discussion on the local project, a report on the literature review and essay, and a keynote address on the subject of historical consciousness in Canada. Workshop participants will also be invited to participate in a test run of the focus group discussions to be held around the province. Questions pertaining to historical consciousness and how it affects culture, identity, and Newfoundland and Labrador nationalism are hot topics of debate, in both the scholarly and cultural communities. Participants will include those who have shown an interest in the project and those who have an interest on the topic. We anticipate your participation in this portion of the Newfoundland and Labrador initiative.
